Vinyl is known well known for its durability and strength when it comes to various weather conditions. If your house still has wood or aluminum siding then vinyl will greatly increase energy efficiency and unlike them it doesn’t decay nor attract termites. It requires little care after installation. It does not require painting like metal or wood siding, and for the most part it is cleaned when it rains. A long lifespan of 10-15 years along with all those assets, compared to its cost, makes it the most popular type used in Chicago area.
Cement Fiber is the latest development in residential siding. The price is slightly greater than vinyl but the cost is overwhelmed by the benefits it provides. First and foremost it is extremely strong, and is capable of withstanding greater degrees of blunt force trauma and weather exposure than wood or vinyl siding. It’s immune to fungal growth and pest infestations, which makes cement siding ideal in moist or humid areas. Higher durability means that cement siding has a longer lifespan than weaker types of siding. Besides basic cleaning, which can be done with a power washer, cement siding usually comes already painted, which will last upwards of ten years before needing to be repainted. Cement burns at a much higher temperature than wood or vinyl does, which means that it can withstand fires much better than traditional types of siding. While that doesn’t mean it is fire resistant, it is much less likely to become damaged in minor fires, and can help prevent the rapid spread of fire that can be a danger with wood siding. Cement siding is made from recyclable materials: liquid cement and sand, which apart from being “green”, means it can be made into an almost limitless range of shades, and can even be made to look like stucco or wood siding if you want the aesthetics of other materials but the benefits of cement siding.
